| Banks, Claiming PPI Compensation, PPI, PPI Refund, Store Card PPI

If you took out a store card any time before 2001, there’s a good chance that you may have been mis-sold a PPI policy. However, many of the claims for store cards were thrown out far too quickly, which means there could be many customers out there due compensation.

Many banks rejected claims without properly looking into them, this was especially true for Santander who formerly owned the country’s biggest store card provider GE Capital from 2008 to 2013; coinciding with a period of high refunds.

Many of these cards were coupled with PPI, and as we’re all aware it has been a bit of a costly mistake for many institutions on the high street.

If you got a store card from stores like: Topshop, Debenhams, Burtons, Dorothy Perkins, Topman, Miss Selfridge, BHS, Asda, B&Q, House of Fraser, Laura Ashley, Toys R Us, River Island, Halfords or Mothercare amongst others, before December 2001, you could be due a refund.

In order to claim back what is rightfully yours, you must contact the underlying company that provided the credit and not the store where you got the card. If you find your claim rejected, then you’re well within your rights to upscale your claim to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Many stores had their store cards operated through GE Capital, which eventually ended up in the hands of Santander. If you have a newer claim, you’d need to go to New Day, who purchased all of Santander’s store card operations from 2013.

Regarding policies sold before 2001, you must submit your claim with the underwriter who ran the operations at the time, this is a company called Genworth Financial Insurance. This falls under the Ombudsman’s remit for any complaints that run all the way back to the ‘80s.

How Can I Claim?

If you’ve still got copies of your documentation, that’s ideal – it will give you all the information you’ll need to start the claim and who you’ll need to get in touch with. If not there are several other options available to you:

Get in Touch with the Store Card Provider

If you remember taking out a store card with a store, then contact that retailer you got it from, and ask them to provide you with the name of the company that was operating the card operations at the time.
